The above picture is the cover of a book given to me by my father for Christmas two years ago as kind of joke about my contentious and ever increasing tattoo collection. To say that tattoos have been the source of many arguments growing up in my family would be an understatement. Partially but not solely because an argument necessitates two parties bringing forth their differing points of view. “No” is not a valid point of view.
Happily tattooed parents are those who still love their tattoos decades later, not those who had one or two done in their youth and now regret them vehemently, turning them from enthusiasts into radical picketers for the un-inked.
The truth of the matter is that, with the exception of those who grew up with *happily tattooed parents, your mother and father are probably never …

Native American sybmol for “equality” on the back of her left hand, between the thumb and forefinger.
The small and only tattoo that the supremely talented Dame Helen Mirren sports is a Native American symbol for equality that she had tattooed while drunk on brandy on an Indian reservation on Minnesota. In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America she said of her tattoo, ”It was a very, very long time ago, when only sailors and Hell’s Angels were tattooed, honestly, and prisoners and I decided to get a tattoo because it was the most shocking thing I could think of doing…And now I’m utterly disgusted and shocked because it’s become completely mainstream, which is unacceptable to me.”

The previous Tattoos For The Screen post was and still is so popular that it seemed only right to create a second installment. It is through popular culture, particularly television and film that many of us are introduced to tattoos. In the last 20+ years tattooing has become not only common but prevalent in mainstream media. Moving Image Theory suggeststhat despite understanding that tv/film characters are not among their social groups, viewers develop something of a personal relationship with characters in their favourites shows such that they respond to the characters as they would a friend or family member. Taking this into account it stands to reason that if these characters or the actors portraying them had tattoos that we would be empathetic to tattoos in real life. This may also be a contributing factor to the reasoning behind older generations being more …

Also on her Myspace page, she cites that the rosary on her shoulder is a sign of her deep devotion. She had the crucifix bearing …

My interest in tattooing has led to a great deal of research but I have discovered that there are some morsels of information that you don’t regularly come across so here is a little advice along with some things that I thought were interesting and some that I wish someone had told me before I started getting tattooed.
Cost. Tattoos do cost money, most shops/studios will have a minimum so if you’re looking for something quite small it may be worth your while to check what the minimum is before you unwittingly commit to spending $200 on a inch-long one word tattoo. While the hilarity of forcibly losing weight because you can’t afford to spend money on food after spending it all on tattoos, leaving you confident to bare your now significantly thinner body to show off your excellent ink is …

How many tattoos do you have: I have 6 tattoos, some big, some small.
I got my first tattoo at 18 – my best friend and I wanted to be tough so we got the toughest tattoo we could think of haha a Japanese symbol that means “courage” on our chests. As promised this is an account of the first of what will inevitably be a minimum of 3 sittings to finish the newest addition to my tattoo collection, the design itself is from a conceptual drawing by Seth Engstrom for the film Sinbad and from all research is a 17th century junk as opposed to the more traditional ships that are more commonly seen in tattooing.
I am having the work done by the immensely talented Zoltan Lendvai of Peril Underground Tattoo in Melbourne.
The first step in the tattoo process is making the stencil. We played with the size and the exact placement, I didn’t want it to come too far onto my stomach nor have it so large that it wrapped around my torso thus making it impossible to see the finished product all at once. It has been a reprehensibly long time between posts and with work and interstate travel for both business and pleasure I have definitely dropped the ball.
To make up for my exceptionally average performance of late I do have some news and a promise of new and exciting posts.
I am booked in this coming Saturday for the first of what is estimated to be three sessions for my new tattoo.
As this is my first big piece (the longest previous sitting topping out at under 2 hours) I will be keeping a kind of diary documenting the tattooing process, the healing and aftercare. There will be photos posted of the entire process but if there are any questions, any part of the process that you are particularly interested in hearing about, press contact or post it on the facebook wall.

This post is dedicated to someone I love who has lost someone that he loves.
The first tattoo that I commissioned was a memorial piece. It is a sanskrit quote from the Bhagavad Gita that talks about the cyclic nature of the soul “the soul is not born, nor does it die. Having not been born it will not be again, the soul is ancient, unborn, eternal, it is not slain with the slaying of the body” to be exact. Before you ask, i’m not going into the story behind being tattooed in a language i don’t speak but I will explain that for me it was the idea that i could offer a place on my skin for a person who had help shape me, loved and inspired me since a young age. While I have photos and …

Not sure how to break down the number of tattoos. Not many but I have 4 separate works.
My first I got when I was in my early 30′s and it is “Om Namah Shivaya” in Sanskrit script on my left forearm. I added to it a year or so later with the hand of Shivaya just above it. Tattooing in today’s culture is so commonplace that it is being recognised as a socially acceptable source of self-expression. If you know anyone with tattoos you will have heard on more than one occasion that they are addicted. They are constantly searching for new ideas for tatttoos, they are the people who spend the better part of winter in tattoo shops so that their ink has healed and settled by summer.
The question that has come up more than once by people without tattoos is why are tattoos so addictive? The reality is that getting a tattoo hurts. For most people it isn’t an unbearale pain but it is definitely uncomfortable. So what is it that sends people back under the needle time and time again. Is it the inherently masochistic streak which resides in all of us spurring us to …

Like many ancient civilisations the Vikings provide massive inspiration for body art, people wanting to represent their heritage or displaying an enthusiasm for the culture. Viking themed tattoos are not uncommon in modern tattoo art, a simple Google Image search of “viking tattoo” will bring up thousands of intricate depictions of Norse gods, Nordic runes, warrior men with plaits and flowing beards wearing horned helms.
The question that I have been asked and come across in my research is whether or not the Vikings themselves were tattooed. The have proved to be some of the most difficult on whom to collate information on their tattooing. It is only over the past few hundred years with photography and tattoos becoming more common that we have been able to see solid records of tattooing. When a body breaks down, the skin is one …

Having spent months in research and reflection, I have finally booked in for my ship tattoo, 3 full day sessions to start with. The design has evolved from where it was some months ago and will probably change a little more before the first sitting. More to the point, I am going to a new tattooist to have the work done. A couple of my friends have been tattooed by the guy who will become my new artist and his work is incredible but the decision did cause more than a little conflict.
A number of people that I know have travelled interstate on a number of occasions to be tattooed by the same artist. The relationship that you build with your tattooist is an odd one, not something that you can really explain to someone who has never been tattooed, …

Favourite style of tattooing? I dont have a favourite style but I hate tribal tattoos on people that have no tribal background or history in there bloodline. Maoris have a strong tribal history and so do brazilians and africans but not bogan white dudes.
Have you ever felt judged, prejudiced against because of your tattoos? Tattoos are as prevalent in current society as they are not only because of the hundreds of people who used their skin to pioneer and parade tattoos, who forced society out of its comfort zone and compelled it to view tattoos as something more than a freakshow attraction.
In the way that it does, TV and cinema have thrust an idea upon the general public and forced people to look upon their idols, and teenage idols adorned with artwork that adds to their character, makes them tougher, rougher round the edges. Gives them more believability and their performance more clout. The prevalence of tattooing in mass media has ingrained a feeling to a large percentage of people, not least my generation that tattooing is sexy. We’re not entirely sure why we find it so attractive. Its not necessarily the fact that …

Tattooing in the military can be traced back to ancient times where shamans, priests or medicine men would tattoo talismans, shields and images for protection on their warriors.
Many tribes and various peoples through history would paint themselves in preparation for battle in addition to wearing permanent tattoos for protection, as a marker of their achievements in battle, to identify them in death, to ensure the correct burial in accordance with their religion or to aid them in their journey to the afterlife.
Modern tattooing is attributed to a voyage by Captain James Cook to the South Pacific where a number of the crew came home with tattoos acquired in the islands. This started a tradition of tattooing in the naval forces and the first emergence of tattooing in a military arm.
With tattoos becoming popular almost commonplace in the British Navy, it …

My tattoo story:
So it goes.
Up until the age of 4 my life was very picket fences. My Mum and Dad, although they weren’t married, lived at home together. My older brother and sister were from my mothers previous marriage, but they were always my kin, never less. December 15th 1987. My mother and I (I was 3 at the time) were doing …
While the likes of Lily Allen, Lindsay Lohan and Rhianna sporting finger tattoos, it is unsurprising that tattooing on fingers has risen in popularity. What is largely unrecognised, though is that to have a tattoo on skin which is highly utilised and sensitive like on the fingers and sides of the feet can often be a better as an idea than in reality.
The skin on the fingers is much thinner than in other areas and is prone to sweating and the frequency in which the fingers are used, scrubbed, washed etc. means that the healing process tends to be different and often trickier than in more commonly tattooed spots. As a result of this the clarity and appearance of a design placed in one of these spots can be somewhat less than if the same design were placed in a …

Long have the artwork and hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt inspired and influenced modern tattooing but the reality of tattooing in the ancient culture is little known. Contrary to popular belief, the Ancient Egyptians were not known for tattooing images of heiroglyphics and depictions of their many gods on their bodies as they did in such infinite detail on everything from the simplest objects of their everyday life to the walls of their burial chambers and their layered sarcophagi.
Tattooing was practiced in Ancient Egypt but was an exclusively female practice. It was previously believed that this tattooing was the mark of prostitutes and for some time, excavator would assume that mummies found with tattoos were of little importance. This theory was shattered upon the discovery of the mummified body of Amunet a high priestess of the goddess Hathor uncovered in1891 a …

In the mid-1800′s and well into the 1900′s the popularity of tattooing went hand in hand with the public affinity for circuses and the “freak shows” that went with them. It began in the early 1800′s with Jean Baptiste Cabri, a French deserter, discovered by Russian explorer George H. von Langsdorff in the Marquesas Islands where he had been tattooed and eventually taken a native wife. After less than a decade exhibiting his tattoos throughout Europe, Cabri quickly slipped from the public eye and died poor and in relative anonymity.
If Cabri opened the door for tattooed show people, John Rutherford wedged that door open, rolled out the carpet and waved the welcome banner. The fanciful stories that he told of the origins of his tattoos, of a shipwreck in New Zealand and subsequent capture by Maori natives, forcible tattooing, assimilation …

Urban Dictionary cites a job blocker as a tattoo visible while wearing business attire, especially a tattoo on the neck. This often extends to tattoos on the hands, wrists and forearms.
A lot of tattoo artists won’t tattoo someone on the neck or hands who does not already have a lot of work done as these are the tattoos which will most likely be regretted. While any tattoo is a lifetime commitment and shouldn’t be rushed into, the potential hurdles that can be a result of a visible tattoo mean that a great deal of thought needs to be put into it. There is still a lot of lingering predjudice against tattooing due to its history, despite its rise in popularity and injection into the mainstream with more and more high profile and largely respected musicians, artists, actors, business …

5000 BC ?The earliest evidence of tattooing in Japan is found in the form of clay figurines that have faces painted or engraved to represent tattoo marks. The oldest figures of this kind have been recovered from tombs dated to 5,000 BC or older. This is a blog to fill what I, and on further consultation a number of my friends, have discovered in my searches, is a void in the market for tattooing.
I should explain in advance that I am not myself a tattooist and while I have tattoos I am not by any measure an expert. I am a person who enjoys tattoos. The history, the art and the unexplored beauty, which is so often underappreciated and lost behind a screen of misguided perceptions and long history of negative publicity.
A girlfriend of mine said it perfectly; “tattoo sites seem to be about ‘typical’ kinds of tattoos, on ‘typical’ kinds of tattooed people. The thing that I like about having tattoos is that most people don’t expect me to have them because I don’t fit the traditional mould as such, and I think …
